The existing kitchen had minimal counter space, the breakfast table was far from the cooking area, and the refrigerator was down the hall in the butler’s pantry. By eliminating a door to an unused stair and raising the sill of the window, the new kitchen cabinets run continuously on the three walls of the kitchen with the new refrigerator. The new triple windows at the sink, view directly to the rear garden. The original ceiling was a foot or more above the old ceiling, and so was raised back to its full height, where new pendant lights highlight the new breakfast table/work area.

“We were very lucky that Doug Ruther was the architect on our kitchen renovation. The kitchen was a total gut. The amount of detail in a kitchen is staggering, and it was important to us that it be more than a good space in which to cook and live, but also relate seamlessly with the rest of our older, Victorian house. Doug’s attention to detail exceeded our own. He designed moldings that echoed those in the immediate rooms. He listened to us carefully and incorporated our aspirations for the room into his work. He added features I never would have thought of, like the lowered windowsills, which enhance the view of the garden. As time passes, I appreciate Doug’s work more and more.”
