Purchased with the intent of becoming a shared family vacation home, the desire for an open layout was a priority for the renovation of this home. Small rooms, characteristic of New England homes, were thus merged into a large kitchen, dining, living space. A new roof with cathedral ceilings, new windows and glass doors creates a light filled first floor with room for a long dining table, a kitchen with island seating, and a new living room with a tall stone fireplace.
A second primary suite was created with space previously used as an artist’s studio above the garage. The area below the passageway connecting the two suites, previously outdoor space, was incorporated into the main structure as a mudroom with a new stair to the primary suites above.
Important to the recreational use of this house, exterior spaces were created by adding a porch to the front of the house overlooking an open lawn and the addition of a bluestone terrace with ample seating, a gas grill, and an outdoor shower tucked off to the side.
